Does pondering (https://chessprogramming.wikispaces.com/Pondering) work in this competition? Do most of the top bots do it? Would it be beneficial for my bot to just calculate digits of pi while my opponent is moving?

Pondering for the purpose of preparing for your next move is allowed. Pondering for the sole purpose of trying to deprive your opponent of resources is not allowed. A aigames developer commented on that in this thread: runtime-environment
As far as the top bots, some do, some don't. Here is a discussion (which includes several top 10 competitors) that discusses pondering: the current state of the game

@ChickenCoop Thanks. I'm a bit late to this competition. How soon do you think I'll have to submit my bot for it to still have enough time to make it into the top 8?

@QuestionCactus you don't have to be worried about your bot not making it through to the top 8 just by not having enough time to play matches. That is completely unfounded.

@twiho Sorry, I didn't read the pinned post carefully enough. I thought that at January 15th, the bots were locked and the top 24 progressed. I got it now. Thanks.
By the way, do most of the top 10 bots use heuristics or some sort of random playout?
