You do not need to compile the bot, we do that for you :)
So to upload a starterbot, download the .zip file and upload it straight away. If you want do edit your bot, just change the source files, zip again and upload again.

Of course, in reality, we all want to test our bots before we upload them, so we do want to compile them. Personally I generally use an IDE when programming in Java, so I wouldn't know how to compile it from the command line by heart. However, that's what I would suggest to you as well, since you are new to this.
Eclipse is the most used Java IDE, so I'd recommend you to take a look at it.

Jasper, unless one wants to test every minuscule change to the code, one can easily just upload the code and test it against the test bot. This also gives a very nice graphical interface, and it only takes a few seconds more to get the result.

Perhaps I was a little presumptuous when I suggested that everyone wants to be able to compile his or her own bot. That said, my point was that there is definitely a place for local testing and I think that it's actually a rather big place, so knowing how to compile your own code is definitely not an unnecessary luxury.

Of course, I do test my bots locally too, but for the first 10 versions or so I just tested on the webpage. It was more to say, that it wasn't required. Some bugs are just easier to debug when you have the visuals, combined with debug messages.
